Does God Exist

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their reasonings, and their senseless hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and they exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible mankind, of birds, four-footed animals, and crawling creatures.” Romans 1:18-23

I was listening to an old YouTube video of a Frank Turek and Christopher Hitchens debate on the existence of God. In his opening remarks, Frank used many of the common arguments for God’s existence, focusing on the cosmological, teleological, and moral arguments for the existence of God. I was struck by a question in my mind – “What does God say is the evidence of His existence?” The Bible actually contains information on this. So what does God say is the evidence of His existence.

In Romans 1:18-32 we are given some of the evidence of God’s existence, namely that His existence is evident within us and within the created world around us. Paul writes that we know in our hearts that God exists, and we suppress this truth because of our unrighteousness. The reality that God exists is actually in all of us. We know it, and choose to suppress it for various reasons. The Romans passage also states that all of creation provides evidence of His existence (also in other places, such as Psalm 19:1). We can just look at the fur on a gray tabby cat or the stripes on a tiger or a zebra and realize there is a creator/designer behind it. The possibility that DNA happened by accident from a mud puddle is simply preposterous. The more we learn about microbiology, the more apparent it becomes that a creator/designer exists. Stephen Meyer writes extensively on this in his book Signature in the Cell.

Another of the proofs that the Bible provides is the word of God, the bible itself. The Bible is like a letter from God to us, explaining Himself to us. Many an atheist has become Christian simply by reading the Bible with the intent to disprove it. One of my favorites is J. Warner Wallace, a cold case detective. He set out to disprove the Bible, but being a detective, he did not let his biases blind him to the content, and before long his reading of the Bible led to His being born again. You can read his story in his book Cold Case Christianity. There are many others, myself included, that moved from atheism to faith simply by reading the Bible with an open mind.

The greatest proof for God’s existence is found in Jesus and the born again experience we all can have through belief in Him. John 1:1-18 informs us that God’s Word became flesh and blood and walked among us. This is an amazing thought, that God became a man and lived among us. Jesus explained God to us. Simply looking at the life and teachings of Jesus, and the positive impact His life has had on our world provides evidence of God’s existence.

I have heard many stories by people who have asked God to prove to them that He exists. The stories are different and unique, and are very interesting to listen to. One place that has a collection of stories like this is I am Second. Another website with stories of how people moved from disbelief to belief in God is the Jews for Jesus-Our Stories website. I personally know some of the people whose stories are on this website. God wants everyone to know Him and have a relationship with Him. He does not want anyone to perish when their body dies. He wants all of us to join Him. But the choice is ours, whether to believe or not. There is much more that could be said on this subject, but for now, I simply ask you, do you believe in God? If not, why not? Have you really looked at the evidence with an open mind? Have you been born again? Have you ever looked at the life of Jesus with an open mind? If you are still in unbelief, I challenge you to examine the evidence for yourself.

When I was in college, because of discussions I was having with some of the Christians at my university, it dawned on me one day that I had never looked into the matter for myself. I just believed what I had been taught by my rabbi (his famous quote to me was that God created man, and man being the gentleman that he is returned the favor), my father, the public school educational system, the culture, my peers, etc. So one day I decided that some day I would read the Bible, if for no other reason I would be better able to debate and argue with the Christians around me (long story). So in 1982, I bought a pocket New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs Bible and read it on the trains in Europe. I was amazed by what I read. My main response was, “Why have I not been told about this before” and “Who has been hiding this from me”. Those were my actual thoughts, word for word. I was blown away by what I read. In January 1983, I was born again (another long story) and it was the best decision I have ever made.

If you are still in unbelief, what are you waiting for? Why have you not seriously investigated this for yourself? Why have you not asked God to show you that He is real and exists? Is it because you want to keep living your life the way you are? Is it because you have committed yourself to denying His existence for some reason? Maybe your response to Jesus is that “Jews don’t believe in Jesus” even though Jesus was a Jew, the first few thousand Christians were all Jewish, and there are thousands of Jews who believe in Jesus and follow Him today. Maybe you have some other reason for unbelief. There are numerous reasons we chose not to believe in God.

Whatever it is, your reason for not being willing to openly consider God’s existence and the life of Jesus has become an idol in your life, and it has become your god. I challenge you to let go of whatever idol is holding you back, whatever idol has clouded your mind, whatever it is that has blinded your mind to the truth. God is real. Jesus lived, died, and rose again that we might have everlasting life by simply believing in Him. Ask God to reveal Himself to you. Ask Him today.

Lord God almighty, I come before you now and ask you to reveal Yourself to me. Show me that You exist. Open your word to me and let me see the truth of your existence and what the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus accomplished for us. Give me eyes to see and ears to hear, that I may believe in You, repent, and be saved. I ask this in Jesus name, amen.
