“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me.”” John 14:6
One of our sons lives in Atlanta. When we go to visit him and his wife, we use a map app to “show us the best way” to get there. Pretty cool. In life we sometimes find ourselves struggling with some aspect of our life, and often we might do an internet search, watch a video, read a book, go to a conference, or ask a friend or co-worker for advice on the best way to deal with the issue, whatever it might be. Or maybe we want to achieve something specific in our life, and are looking for the best way to accomplish it. Life is full of moments when we are looking for “The Way” to get to where we want to be. When Jesus was here, He told us that He is “The Way”, the “True Way”, the “Way to the Life” that we are all seeking.
“There is a way which seems right to a person, but its end is the way of death.”
Proverbs 14:12
Our desire to know “The Way” is not a new thing. King Solomon wrote the proverbs over three thousand years ago, and told us that there is a way that seems right to us, but it is wrong and does not lead to the life we want. When Jesus was here, he told us that He is the way, the true way to the life we want. He goes further and tells us that He is not only the true way to life, but He is the only way to God.
Jesus is the only way to God. Many people have difficulty with this statement. It is very common for people to say they believe there are many paths to God. Jesus says that while this may seem right to us, it is not true. He is the only path to life and the only path to God. All other paths are false. He is the only true way. Most if not all religions give us “a Way” to salvation or to achieve the purpose of life. We must follow a certain prescribed path, keep certain commands, abide by the rules, fast, pray multiple times a day, go to Mecca, eliminate attachments to worldly things, meditate, etc. to achieve the purpose of life. Christianity does not give us a path to follow, but a person to follow, Jesus. He is the way, the true way to life, the only way to God. And we are told that all we have to do is believe in Him and we can know God and have abundant everlasting life.
Jesus said that He came to us so that we “might have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). Do you want to know God and have a relationship with Him? Jesus said that He is the only way to God. Turn to Jesus, invite Him into your life, and you will truly have life, abundant life, everlasting life. Jesus stands at the door of our hearts and knocks, asking us to let Him into our life so that we may have true life. (Revelation 3:20) When we let Jesus into our life, we are born again and become children of God.
What are some of the paths you following today? How is it working for you? Do you have the life you want? What are some of the areas of your life that could be better? What are some of the paths that the world says will give us the life that we want? Is there evidence that they work? How have they worked out for people who have made it to the top? If you were to die today, do you believe you have everlasting life? Why? If you are not born again yet, what is holding you back from letting Jesus into your life right now? Jesus offers us abundant life, everlasting life, with God the Father. Jesus is the Way, the only way. Choose to let Him into your life today by opening the door to your heart and letting Him in.
Jesus, I hear you knocking at the door of my heart and life. I ask you to come into my life. I want to have the abundant life that You promise us if we will follow You. I want to know the Father and have everlasting life. I believe You are the way, the truth, and the life and that You are the only way to God. I acknowledge that I am a sinner and that You died on the cross to rescue me from sin and death and to restore me to the Father. I choose now to open the door of my heart and let You into my life. I want to be born again, into newness of life. I want to follow You. Come into my life and lead me in the everlasting way. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
