Choose Your Friends Wisely

Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.”

(I Corinthians 15:33)

It is important to have friends. Good friends. Godly friends. It is also important to be a good friend, to be a godly friend. Proverbs 27:17 says that “as iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another”.  When we have godly friends, and when we are being a godly friend, we sharpen each other’s lives. We help each other walk as men of God. We encourage one another in our faith. We counsel each other, growing together in God’s wisdom. We hold each other accountable for godliness, purity and holiness. We are open and real with each other. We connect on a core level. This is true biblical friendship. Strive for this level of friendship with the people God brings into your life. Be a positive godly influence on your friends, and choose friends that have a positive godly influence on you.

Another way to understand the importance of choosing your friends wisely is the concept of peer pressure. Peer pressure can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your peers. Whether you believe it or not, you will rub off on each other and there is nothing you can do about it. It just happens when you spend time together. As an example the Bible warns us not to associate with a man given to anger lest we learn his ways and it becomes a snare (Proverbs 22:24-25). If your friends encourage you to honor and follow God, then you have chosen your friends well. If they encourage you to be foolish and pursue an ungodly lifestyle, you need to get new friends. Choosing our friends wisely is much more important than most of us think.

During my thirty year High School reunion I was able to spend some time with some close friends from my past. I noticed a very interesting thing. They said things using the same words I use and had mannerisms just like mine. It was like we were carrying a piece of each other around with us all these years, deeply embedded in our personalities. And we didn’t even know it. Even though I had not seen them or been around them for thirty years, the time that we had spent together in Junior High and High School was still affecting me. We rubbed off on each other. The people you spend time with will rub off on you – period. And you will rub off on them. So chose your friends wisely. And also choose to be a wise and godly friend to others. Choosing your friends wisely is one of the most important choices you will make in life.

Growing up Jewish, the extent of my knowledge about Jesus and Christianity was limited to what was on the rock album "Jesus Christ Superstar". Becoming born again in college, that changed. Jesus showed up, and my life has never been the same. I thank God every day for bringing me into His kingdom, and write these blogs to remember what He has shown me, and to share them with my four sons and others. I owe much to several pastors who have strongly influenced me over the years, including Arnold Fruchtenbaum, Robert Lewis, John Ortberg, John Eldredge, and most recently Tim Keller and David Levine. Many of my blogs are the 'aha' moments that I have had over the years from listening to their sermons and reading their books, and I owe them a great debt of gratitude. My prayer for you is that you will be blessed by these writings, that God will become more real to you, and that your relationship with Him will become more profound as you grow in His grace.
