Living Water

Life is full of amazing things, and we often find ourselves hungering and thirsting for the things we do not have, or do not have enough of. Maybe it is some cool car that we want. Maybe it is the ultimate mate. Maybe it is children. Maybe it is more money, a better house, a better job, etc., etc., etc.  The list goes on and on, of things we hunger and thirst for. Jesus tells us he has an answer for this, and that if we will ask Him for it, He will give it to us, and we will never thirst again.

“A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” For His disciples had gone away to the city to buy food. So the Samaritan woman said to Him, “How is it that You, though You are a Jew, are asking me for a drink, though I am a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus replied to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” She said to Him, “Sir, You have no bucket and the well is deep; where then do You get this living water? You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well and drank of it himself, and his sons and his cattle?” Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never be thirsty; but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life.””  (John 4:7-14)

Jesus tells the Samaritan woman that if she knew who she was talking to, she would ask Him and He would giver her living water, that if she drinks it, she will never thirst again. And not only that, but it will become a “fountain of water springing up to eternal life” in her.

When we find ourselves thirsting for things in life, we must go to Jesus, and ask Him for the living water. What are some of the things you are thirsting for today? Have you met Jesus at the well and asked him to give you  His living water? I encourage you to do so today.

Lord Jesus, we come before you today and ask that You would give us Your living water and that it would become in us a fountain of water springing up to eternal life. Deliver us from thirsting after the things of the world. Teach us to set our eyes on You and Your Kingdom. Let Your living water change us forever. Let it spring up into a fountain of eternal life for us and for those around us. We pray these things in Jesus name, amen.

Growing up Jewish, the extent of my knowledge about Jesus and Christianity was limited to what was on the rock album "Jesus Christ Superstar". Becoming born again in college, that changed. Jesus showed up, and my life has never been the same. I thank God every day for bringing me into His kingdom, and write these blogs to remember what He has shown me, and to share them with my four sons and others. I owe much to several pastors who have strongly influenced me over the years, including Arnold Fruchtenbaum, Robert Lewis, John Ortberg, John Eldredge, and most recently Tim Keller and David Levine. Many of my blogs are the 'aha' moments that I have had over the years from listening to their sermons and reading their books, and I owe them a great debt of gratitude. My prayer for you is that you will be blessed by these writings, that God will become more real to you, and that your relationship with Him will become more profound as you grow in His grace.
