Deuteronomy 6:4-9 – These Words Shall Be Upon Your Heart

“Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” (Deuteronomy 6:4-9)

In the beginning was the Word.  And the Word was with God.  And the Word was God.”  This is the opening verse to the book of John.  To Many, John chapter one is the most glorious passage of scripture.  I would even go so far as to say it may be the greatest fragment of writing that the world has ever been given.  There is no piece of writing that compares to it.  If you have never read it, or if it has been a while since you last did, please stop reading this and read John Chapter one now before going on.

The Blood of the Lamb

When the Hebrews were slaves in Egypt, and Pharaoh would not let them go per Moses requests, God performed one last plague to cause Pharaoh to release his Israelite slaves.  God was in essence asking Pharaoh to let his work force go, which would result in a massive economic collapse, and Pharaoh had been reticent to comply.  But this last plague was different than the others.  It was much more serious.  It was the angel of death.

Passover was born in blood.  First there is the blood that was shed in the killing of the lambs the day before the Passover.  Then there was the painting of the blood of the lamb on the doorposts of the houses of the Hebrew homes.  God instructed them to do this so that the angel of death would pass over their homes and spare them the judgment that was coming upon the earth that night in Egypt.  Then there was the blood of the Egyptian dead, all of the first born males, of man and beast.  It was the blood spilled on Passover that led to our ancestors deliverance.  Without the shedding of blood, there would have been no deliverance.  The previous plagues were bad, sure, but nobody died, there was no blood spilled.

It was the blood that set us free finally.  The blood of the lamb that had been sacrificed the day before saved the Hebrew homes from being impacted by the angel of death.  The lamb’s blood on the doorpost of their homes kept the angel of death away.  He passed over their home when he saw the blood of the lamb.

The Lamb of God

When John saw Jesus coming to be baptized, he said, “Behold the lamb of God, that takes away the sins of the world.”  Let that sink in for a minute…….Stop reading and let God speak to you about the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world.  Your sins.  Taken away. By a Lamb.  Hmmmmm.

“And the word became flesh and dwelt among us.  And we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14

Jesus is the Lamb of God.  He is THE Passover Lamb.  And we are to sprinkle His blood on the doorpost of our house, our heart, so that the angel of death will pass over us when he comes.  When we sprinkle His blood on our heart, we are putting the Word of God on our heart – we are applying Jesus, the Word who became flesh, to our heart.  This is the only way to avoid the angel of death at the end of our lives here on earth.  The blood of the Lamb of God.

Judgment

When Jesus was here, at one point in his ministry a city rejected Him, and the disciples asked if they should pray for fire to come down out of heaven and consume that city for rejecting Him. (Luke 9:51-56)  Jesus rebuked them.  But what is interesting is that the disciples thought that if God’s judgment were to fall on the earth, they would be okay.  Not true.

If Jesus had said yes, and the angel of death showed up, everyone would have died except for Jesus, including all of his disciples.  The blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus, had not been shed yet, and had not been applied to their hearts yet. The Passover blood on the doorposts reminds us that if God’s judgment were to show up, without the protection of the sacrifice of the Lamb of God on our life, we would all die.  We must apply the Word of God, Jesus, to our hearts, in order to be saved.

Eternal Life

And this is God’s command to us, to believe in His Son who He sent to be the propitiation for our sins.  Jesus was sent to be the Passover sacrifice for all of humanity, that whosoever believes in Him might not perish, but have eternal life. (John 3:16)  Our choice is between judgment and eternal life.  Our faith, or lack of faith, determines which of these two fates awaits us.

Have you applied the blood of the Lamb to your life?  Is the Word of God on your heart?  If not, why?  Are you taking your chances with God like Pharaoh did, thinking that all this nonsense Moses (Christians) has been talking about is just that, nonsense?  Have you hardened your heart against God, just as Pharaoh did, or are you willing to listen to the Word of God?  Do you not believe Moses and the Prophets?  There is a heaven and a hell, and the angel of death is coming for you.  He is coming for all of us eventually.  Are you ready for him?  Are you ready for him to show up today?

When the angel of death comes, will he stop at your house and take you, or will he pass over?  Jesus said that “If you believe in me, you will never die.”  It is as though a person who has the blood of the Lamb of God on his heart experiences death in a different way.  Jesus also said that He “goes to prepare a place for us, and that He will return to get us and take us to it.”  So rather than the angel of death coming to get us, Jesus comes to get those who have applied His blood to their heart.  Sounds like a much better way to go.  What are you waiting for?  Ask the Lamb of God to apply His blood to your heart today.  Join me in this prayer:

Lord Jesus, Lamb of God, Word become flesh, I pray that you would mark the doorpost of my house, with your blood, just as the Hebrews marked the doorposts of their houses that day in Egypt.  Apply your shed blood to my heart, that I may be forgiven my sins, and pass out of judgment into life everlasting.  I believe in you.  I pray that the angel of death would pass over me because of your blood on my heart.  I let go of my doubts about heaven and hell, and choose to believe your word, that they are real places.  I do not want to go to hell.  I want to go to heaven and be with you for all of eternity.  I pray that you would make it so.  I ask this by faith in the word of God that Jesus spoke when He was here, just as the Hebrews acted by faith on the words of Moses.   In the name of Jesus I pray.  Amen.

“You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is to be handed over for crucifixion.”
Matthew 26:2

“When the hour had come, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves; for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.” And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.”” Luke 22:14-20

“For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.”
1 Corinthians 5:7

“…conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.” 1 Peter 1:17-19

“…but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
1 John 1:7

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Psalm 119:105

John Chapter 1 verses 1-18
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light. There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. John *testified about Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’” For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.

Growing up Jewish, the extent of my knowledge about Jesus and Christianity was limited to what was on the rock album "Jesus Christ Superstar". Becoming born again in college, that changed. Jesus showed up, and my life has never been the same. I thank God every day for bringing me into His kingdom, and write these blogs to remember what He has shown me, and to share them with my four sons and others. I owe much to several pastors who have strongly influenced me over the years, including Arnold Fruchtenbaum, Robert Lewis, John Ortberg, John Eldredge, and most recently Tim Keller and David Levine. Many of my blogs are the 'aha' moments that I have had over the years from listening to their sermons and reading their books, and I owe them a great debt of gratitude. My prayer for you is that you will be blessed by these writings, that God will become more real to you, and that your relationship with Him will become more profound as you grow in His grace.
