The Gospel in Exodus: I AM

How can God be in all places at all times. How can He know the future? How is this possible? Is this something we can begin to understand? One possible explanation can be found in Quantum Physic’s understanding of light in relation to time.

“This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.” 1 John 1:5

“And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb.” Revelation 21:23

“At the speed of light, time stops entirely, travel time collapses to zero, and space flattens out, enabling a being moving at the speed of light to be everywhere and everywhen at once.” Summary of Quantum Physics regarding time and the speed of light

If God is indeed light, moving and existing at the speed of light, then he is everywhere and everywhen all at once. He is at the beginning of the creation of the universe and is simultaneously at the end of the universe, and is also everywhere/everywhen in between. He exists at all places at all times all at once. He simply is, hence the name He gave to Moses in Exodus, when Moses asked Him what is His name.

“Then Moses said to God, “Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ Now they may say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:13-14

God replied, “I AM”. He simply is. Everywhere and everywhen. He knows the future because He is there, existing at all points between now and the end of time simultaneously, as well as eternity past. He leaves and arrives everywhere and everywhen simultaneously. He exists at all times and all places in the entire universe constantly. This is how He is omniscient and omnipresent. God is being itself. He is existence. He simply is. He is the embodiment of the verb “to be”. Hence His name, “I AM”.

This illustrates that it is impossible for Moses to have come up with the name for God as being “I AM” on his own. He knew nothing of quantum physics, the speed of light, what light even is, etc., when he wrote Exodus. It indicates that the words God gave Moses to record were indeed from a supreme being of some kind, known to us as God. A being that is outside of time and space, unaffected by the limitations we experience in time and space. But God is more than just light.

In Genesis 1 we read:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.”  Genesis 1:1-5

God created light. It is a created thing, just like matter and life. The idea of light did not really exist in Moses day. At that time, we understood that there was sun and there was fire. We also grouped the moon and stars in our understanding of light. But we had no concept of light as a thing itself. No understanding of photons, the speed of light, etc. If a man had written Genesis 1 on his own, he probably would have said “in the beginning God created the sun, moon, fire, and stars”, not talking about light itself as a thing, because as far as we know that idea did not exist yet n the mind of man.

So maybe God is made of light, like we are made of matter? Or maybe He simply moves at the speed of light because He is not made of matter. We also read in the Bible that God is spirit. When Jesus is speaking with the Samaritan woman at the well, He tells her:

“God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”  John 4:24

So we do not know what God is made of, (if such a thing can even be said since technically He is not “made” in the sense that we are), just that “HE IS”. But thanks to quantum physics we at least are now able to understand how it is possible to be everywhere and everywhen all at once. We are able to see how it is possible to compress all of time and space into a moment. And that is where and when God is. HE IS.

Thank you Father God, for revealing to us your infinite presence, knowledge, and power through Your written and created word. You are truly magnificent beyond comprehension. Thank you for enabling us to begin to grasp how Your Omni-Existence is even possible. We thank you for the physicists that did this work. We pray that You would continue to reveal Yourself to us more fully each day, and look forward to the day that we know You as fully as You can be known. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

“The heavens are telling of the glory of God;
And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.
Day to day pours forth speech,
And night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words;
Their voice is not heard.
Their line has gone out through all the earth,
And their utterances to the end of the world.
“
Psalm 19:1-

God of Your Fathers

Growing up Jewish, the extent of my knowledge about Jesus and Christianity was limited to what was on the rock album “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Becoming born again in college, that changed. Jesus showed up, and my life has never been the same. I thank God every day for bringing me into His kingdom, and write these blogs to remember what He has shown me, and to share them with my four sons and others. I owe much to several pastors who have strongly influenced me over the years, including Arnold Fruchtenbaum, Robert Lewis, John Ortberg, John Eldredge, Tim Keller, David Levine, and most recently Tim Mackie and Joby Martin. Many of my blogs are the ‘aha’ moments that I have had over the years from listening to their sermons and reading their books, and I owe them a great debt of gratitude. God has used them mightily in my life, and I feel that I am standing on the shoulders of giants. My prayer for you is that you will be blessed by these writings, that God will become more real to you, and that your relationship with Him will become deeper, more real, and more profound as you grow in His grace – that you will be a disciple of Jesus Christ all the days of your life. If we have never met, I look forward to meeting you in the Kingdom of God someday.
